Hey FOLKS!

My name's Johnny Winter, and I'm the founder of Greyskull Analytics. I set up Greyskull Analytics to allow me to operate as an independent data consultant.

When deciding to found my own company, I thought long and hard about the what and why of Greyskull Analytics existing.

I came up with a set of values that guide everything I do. And these things are important to me! So I want to shout loud about them here on my homepage rather than hiding them away on a corporate "about us" page. Want to know what Greyskull Analytics is all about? Read on...

Obsessed with doing data well

When you hire a consultant, you should be hiring an expert. That means getting someone who's been there, done it, and got the battle scars. But it should also be someone who doesn't rest on their laurels. The data world moves fast and keeping on top of new developments and industry trends is an absolute must. For me, data is not just a career, it's a vocation. I really do live and breathe this stuff and I'm always striving to improve myself. I combine lived experience and continuous research to make sure I can keep at the front of the pack. Ultimately my goal is to make sure I can continue to do work that I'm proud of.

No Bullsh*t

Transparency is really important to me, and this manifest itself in a couple of ways.

Firstly, I feel it's important to be candid about my areas of expertise. It might be that the skills and advice I can offer aren't a good fit for your business, and if that's the case, let's have an honest conversation about it. Perhaps I can help identity or refer a consultancy that would be a good fit. And that's not to say I'm not prepared to do things that are outside of my comfort zone. Sometimes doing something new for the first time is required - but that's ok, that's how people grow! I just want to make sure that I reflect my level of experience openly and you know what you're getting.

Secondly, the data industry can be confusing. I don't want to baffle you with flowery language. When other organisations are peddling "actionable insights", what do they even mean? Why are they trying to make you think that data can help you achieve some kind of transcendental state?! My aim is simple; I want to help you use data to achieve your business goals.

Keep it simple, stupid

If you're weren't familiar with the acronym K.I.S.S. then you are now. "Keep It Simple, Stupid" is a design principle to make sure you don't over-engineer solutions. Data doesn't have to be difficult! Think of Occam's Razor and the idea that all things being equal, the simpler solution will normally be the better solution. Fewer moving parts mean that fewer things can go wrong, and I honestly believe that doing basic things well is one of the keys to establishing solid fundamentals and a good foundation on which to build and grow any solution.

Data can be for everyone

I really do believe that every business can benefit by having a better understanding of their data and that they will be better off if they put some thought into how using that data can best help them. That really does mean EVERY business. You could be a one-person band or part of a huge enterprise. The size of your organisation should not be a barrier to you using data to meet your goals. Cost should not be a barrier either. Data initiatives don't have to be six-figure+ investments.  Appropriately sized and priced solutions are possible for organisations of all shapes and sizes.

Teach a man to fish

I don't want to be a crutch for my customers. It's no good paying top dollar for a consultant if they leave you behind with a solution that you can't maintain yourself. Playing into the K.I.S.S. principle, I want my solutions to be sustainable, but it's also important to bring you and your team along for the journey, making sure your knowledge and understanding of how to get the best from your data grows as a project is delivered. Although I want to play a big part in your success, I don't want your success to become dependent on me. I want to make sure you're fed for a lifetime, not just a day.

Have fun

I take my work very seriously, but I don't take myself too seriously (just in case the tone of this website hadn't given it away already)! Life is short, and we spend a huge chunk of it at work. I want to enjoy working and I want you to enjoy working with me. So I like to keep things light. I want to be approachable and engaging and for you to come away from working with me with a smile on your face.
